Improving Our Running Environment

A challenge when running in an urban environment is the condition of the sidewalks and roads. Luckily the St. Lawrence neighbourhood has active community and business organizations (including runners) that encourage our City government to maintain these areas. The above photo was taken several years ago. The location is Church Street, south of The Esplanade, only a few blocks from the financial district and in an area known for theatres, restaurants and The St. Lawrence Market. High density residential buildings are located on the east side of the street. The adjacent parking lot had taken over the public right-of-way and pedestrians were forced to walk on the road. Under Mayor Miller's Clean and Beautiful initiative the community and Councillor Pam McConnell finally were able to have a new sidewalk constructed. The photo below shows the street after construction in November.

The cars are now pushed back and 5 trees have been planted providing pedestrians with a comfortable street condition. In the spring we can look forward to a safer and greener street that compliments the neighbourhood rather that detracts from it. We'll continue to monitor street conditions and encourage improved streetscapes.

  1. This is a significant change to our neighbourhood. It is amazing how things can be done for the better. Thanks to those who made this happen.
