Run Into the New Year

The St. Lawrence Runners will be hosting its Second Annual New Years Eve Run on December 31, 2009. Why watch the fireworks from the comforts of your living room or in a crowded party room when you can enjoy the spectacle with your fellow runners. Ring in the new year and decade with an easy 8-9km run through the streets of downtown Toronto.

Leaving at the front of the St. Lawrence Market at 11:15pm.

Improving Our Running Environment

A challenge when running in an urban environment is the condition of the sidewalks and roads. Luckily the St. Lawrence neighbourhood has active community and business organizations (including runners) that encourage our City government to maintain these areas. The above photo was taken several years ago. The location is Church Street, south of The Esplanade, only a few blocks from the financial district and in an area known for theatres, restaurants and The St. Lawrence Market. High density residential buildings are located on the east side of the street. The adjacent parking lot had taken over the public right-of-way and pedestrians were forced to walk on the road. Under Mayor Miller's Clean and Beautiful initiative the community and Councillor Pam McConnell finally were able to have a new sidewalk constructed. The photo below shows the street after construction in November.

The cars are now pushed back and 5 trees have been planted providing pedestrians with a comfortable street condition. In the spring we can look forward to a safer and greener street that compliments the neighbourhood rather that detracts from it. We'll continue to monitor street conditions and encourage improved streetscapes.

Local runners cheered on the Olympic Torch this morning. Long-time running supporter Anthony provided free coffee to anyone at his Second Cup cafe at 6:30 a.m. to watch the torch move along Front Street. These guys will do anything for a free coffee.

Jane's Run - Spring 2009

2009 was the first time we organized a Jane's Run as part of the Jane's Walk program. We ran approximately 8 km through St. Lawrence, The Distillery, along the Don River, Cabbagetown and Regent Park and stopped in each area. A local expert gave us some perspective on the history and current events in each neighbourhood.

Here we are in Cabbagetown with Councillor Pam McConnell. She's speaking about some exciting new housing options in the neighbourhood.
